STDs - Sexually Transmitted Diseases
What is Sexually transmitted diseases or STD?
A sexually transmitted disease (STD) is an illness that has a significant probability of transmission between humans or animals by means of human sexual behavior, including vaginal intercourse, oral sex, and anal sex.
What is Sexually transmitted Infection or STI?
Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) in many cases is used as another name for Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD). Infact, in recent years the term sexually transmitted infection (STI) has been preferred over STD, as it has a broader range of meaning; a person may be infected, and may potentially infect others, without showing signs of disease.
Difference between Infection and diseases.
Infection simply means that a germ, virus, bacteria, or parasite that can cause disease or sickness is present inside a person's body. An infected person does not necessarily have any symptoms or signs that the virus or bacteria is actually hurting his or her body; they do not necessarily feel sick.
A disease means that the infection is actually causing the infected person to feel sick, or to notice something is wrong.
How does one get infected by STD?
Most STDs are transmitted if you have sexual contact with someone who has an STD. However there are some infections which can also be passed on in other ways like sharing drug needle, transmission of infected blood etc.
How can one save himself from getting infected.
Prevention is key in addressing incurable STIs, such as HIV & herpes.
The most effective way to prevent sexual transmission of STIs is to avoid contact of body parts or fluids which can lead to transfer with an infected partner.
Condom
Vaccine
Ideally, one should get tested (himself and the other partner)for STI, and if found infected, should avoid having sex with the infected person. Because use of condom also doesn't give 100% guarentee against STI. Some infections don't get detected in the test immediately exposure, so even if one tests negative, protection should be used.
